Tourist Places In And Around Patna

Tourists can soak in the soothing essence of Buddhism by visiting Vaihali, Kesariya and Bodhgaya. Vaishali is known as the birthplace of Lord Mahavira and also the place where Buddha preached his last sermon. Vaishali has a beautiful Japanese peace pagoda and the beauty of the noble lion on top of the 2300-year-old Ashoka pillar is beyond words.

Kesariya is known for the tall stupa where Buddha donated his begging bowl, before his demise. Buddhist pilgrims and tourists from round the world congregate at Bodhgaya, where Gautam Buddha received enlightenment under a Bodhi tree. The roots of the original tree rest serenely and many pilgrims prefer to meditate near it.

During the months of October to March, the area becomes an ocean of maroon robes, when many pilgrims come to offer prayers at the peaceful spot. The Dalai Lama himself spends a few months at Bodhgaya. The Dungeshwari cave temples are located 12 km from Bodhgaya and apart from being revered shrines for Buddhist and Hindus alike, are a fine example of workmanship.

The Sonepur Mela is primarily a cattle fair, which attracts visitors from different parts of Asia.
