Conduction of Trials

UPMRCL completed the first test run on the up-line from Kanpur Central Station to Naubasta. The trial was conducted in the presence of UPMRCL Managing Director Sushil Kumar. During the inspection, he reviewed important systems including the metro tracks, third rail, power supply, and signalling arrangements to ensure they were functioning properly and safely.

Kanpur Metro Phase I

Kanpur Metro Phase 1 has a total length of 32.4 km and includes two metro corridors. At present, Line 1 is partially operational, while construction work on Line 2 is still going on. Corridor 1 runs from IIT Kanpur to Naubasta and is about 23.8 km long, with 21 stations planned along the route. Corridor 2 will connect the Agriculture University with Barra-8 and will be 8.6 km long, with eight stations.

Inauguration of Kanpur Metro

The priority section of Kanpur Metro was inaugurated in December 2021 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This first stretch was about 9 km long and connected IIT Kanpur with Moti Jheel. Later, on May 30, 2025, the Prime Minister inaugurated another 5 km stretch of Line 1. At present, around 15 km of Line 1, linking IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central Station, is open for passengers.

With the latest trial run extending towards Naubasta, UPMRCL is working towards making the entire Line 1 fully operational at the earliest. Once completed, the metro is expected to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and provide a faster and more comfortable travel option for people in Kanpur.
