The expansion of Mumbai Metro Line 5 was a major topic of discussion in a recent review meeting. The metro line, which connects Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, is currently under construction, and MP Shrikant Shinde suggested extending the corridor in phases beyond its current route.

Mumbai Metro Line 5A
He proposed a new Line 5A from Durgadi Naka through Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, and Ambernath up to the upcoming Chikhloli railway station. He further demanded that the line be extended from Chikhloli to Badlapur so that residents there can also benefit from metro connectivity. Shinde also suggested Line 5C from Durgadi to Titwala to reduce overcrowding in suburban trains and cut down road traffic. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reportedly responded positively and agreed to study the proposals.
Review of Progress on Mumbai Metro Line 12
The meeting also reviewed progress on Mumbai Metro Line 12, where pillars and stations are being built. Shinde asked officials to speed up work and prepare a plan to extend the line from Shilphata via Mumbra and Kalwa to Thane city, improving connectivity within Thane district. He also pushed for faster planning and early work on Mumbai Metro Line 14, which is expected to begin soon.
Development of Metro Line 5, 12, & 14
One key proposal was to develop parts of Metro Lines 5, 12, and 14 as double-decker corridors, with a road at ground level, a flyover above it, and an elevated metro line on top to save space and improve travel in crowded areas.
