Passengers who use wheelchairs while travelling on the Chennai Metro Rail will soon be able to board trains more easily with the help of portable ramps. The facility, which has been requested for many years by persons with disabilities, is expected to be available later this month. For a long
time, wheelchair users have faced difficulty getting on and off Metro trains due to the gap between the train and the platform. The portable ramps will help bridge this gap and make boarding safer and more comfortable.
Introduction of Ramps by Chennai Metro
Nearly 11 years after the Metro system began operations, the ramps are finally being introduced, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited plans to purchase. The Chennai Metro network currently covers about 54 km and has 41 stations. Officials said the ramps should be ready for use across the network within the next three weeks. In February, around 200 ramps were delivered and distributed to stations across the Metro system. Each platform will have two ramps available for passengers who need assistance.
Storage Provision & Training
Metro authorities are also making small arrangements at stations to store the ramps. Hooks or hanging spaces will be installed to keep them ready for quick use. In addition, Metro staff will be trained to handle and place the ramps safely when required. Officials explained that when a wheelchair user enters the station, staff at the ticket counter will inform platform staff. They will then prepare to place the ramp when the train arrives, making it easier for the passenger to board.
Commuters Opinions
R. Sathish Kumar, a member of the Disability Rights Alliance who often travels by Metro, welcomed the move. He said he is happy that such a facility is finally being introduced and hopes the ramp will be smooth, flat, and easy to use.
However, he also pointed out that the success will depend on how well it is implemented. He said staff should be present on the platform to place the ramp quickly so that passengers do not miss their trains, especially during busy hours.
