The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified 34 locations near Metro stations, where parking facilities will be developed. Work has already started at four of these sites.
Parking Areas in Pune Metro Stations
According to Dinkar Gojare, chief engineer of PMC's project department, a joint committee of PMC and Metro officials conducted a survey to find suitable locations. After the survey, the 34 sites were finalised. These parking areas will be located along all three Metro lines in the city, including the upcoming Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor.
As of March 2026, the Pune Metro already provides official pay-and-park facilities at eight major stations on Line 1, Purple Line, and Line 2, Aqua Line. Authorities have also approved additional parking spaces for the new Line 3, which will connect Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. The aim is to make it easier for commuters to park their vehicles and continue their journey by Metro.
Development of Public Transport
Members of citizen groups believe that such facilities are essential to encourage people to use public transport. Sanjay Shitole from the citizens' group Pune City Eye said the administration should focus more on improving public transport and related infrastructure. He said parking facilities near Metro stations are an important step in making the Metro system more successful in the city.
Urban planners and activists also stressed that improving last-mile connectivity is crucial to increasing public transport use. They said the lack of convenient connectivity from homes or offices to Metro stations forces many people to rely on private vehicles.
Meanwhile, the civic administration has written to Maha Metro to study the feasibility of a new Metro line connecting Wakad, Katraj, and Shewalewadi. The proposal followed suggestions from elected representatives to explore a Metro route between these areas. PMC has asked Maha Metro to check whether this proposed line can be included in the city's Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).
