Kerala Government Approves 31 km Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project to Transform City Transport

The Kerala government has approved the alignment for the first phase of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project, marking a major step in improving the state capital's transport system. The project will be carried out by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and will link key parts of the city, such as

Metro Route to Connect City's Hubs

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave in-principle approval for the metro alignment from Pappanamcode to Enchakkal. This route will cover 31 km and include 27 stations. It has been chosen as the most suitable and future-ready option, aiming to connect the city's main transport hubs and IT corridors for smoother travel between Technopark and the city centre.

Planned Stations

The planned stations include Pappanamcode, Kaimanam, Karamana, Killipalam, Thampanoor, Secretariat, Palayam, Pattom, Ulloor, Medical College, Technopark Phases I-III, the airport, and several others. The route was finalized following detailed studies by KMRL, including traffic, environmental, and economic assessments. These studies found that a full-scale metro system, such as the Kochi Metro, would best serve the city's growing transport needs. A high-level committee led by the Chief Secretary reviewed several route options before finalizing this alignment, ensuring it connects major hubs like the airport and railway stations, as per the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.

Preparation of DPR

Preparatory works under KMRL are already underway, including flyover construction at Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom. The Sreekaryam flyover is progressing quickly. Officials said the metro will transform travel in Thiruvananthapuram by reducing congestion, cutting travel time, and supporting urban growth. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared, following its executive summary submission in February 2024. With financial approval received, the project will next go to the state cabinet for final clearance.
