Digital payments are quickly becoming the most popular way to buy tickets on the Nagpur Metro. According to official data, nearly one cashless ticket is generated every two seconds while the metro is operating.

Record of Passenger Journeys
Figures from the annual report of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) for 2024-25 show that the metro recorded about 2.69 crore passenger journeys in 2025, which is about 5% higher than the previous year. Out of the total fare revenue collected, around 45% came from digital payment methods such as National Common Mobility Card, UPI, and point-of-sale card payments.
Increase in Digital Payments
The numbers show how quickly passengers are shifting to digital ticketing. With 2.69 crore annual journeys, the metro handles around 73,700 passengers on an average day. Trains run for about 16 hours daily, from 6 am to 10 pm. This means nearly 4,600 people travel every hour, or about 77 passengers every minute. If about 45% of them use digital payments, around 32 to 39 commuters each minute choose cashless ticketing.
Official's Opinions
Officials say the use of digital payments has increased even more in the current financial year. The 45% figure only reflects data until March 2025. Since then, digital transactions have crossed 50% of total ticket purchases. Moreover, they added that MahaCards account for nearly half of all digital transactions, especially among daily commuters and pass holders. Payments through UPI, WhatsApp ticketing, and POS machines make up the rest. More than one lakh passengers now use MahaCards because they allow faster entry at gates and easy recharge.
