The Nagpur Metro Rail project has received Rs 150 crore in the Maharashtra government's 2026-27 budget. At the same time, the state government has announced a long-term plan to expand metro rail networks across major cities in Maharashtra to nearly 1,200 km by 2047.

Funds Allocation of Nagpur Metro
According to the budget documents, the amount has been allocated under the category "Equity of State Government in Nagpur Metro Rail Project." The same amount was also provided for the project in the previous year's budget. Officials say the metro system in Nagpur could expand significantly in the coming decades as part of the state's broader transport vision.
Development of Metro Network
Presenting the budget, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the government aims to develop around 1,200 km of metro network by 2047. At present, metro projects covering nearly 490 km have already been started in the state's major cities, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
Out of this, about 173 km of metro lines are already operational. Another 50 km of metro routes are expected to start services within the next year. In addition, the government hopes that nearly 165 km of new metro lines will become operational by 2029 as current construction projects progress.
Nagpur Metro's Operations
Officials from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited said that Nagpur's metro network could grow to more than 150 km by 2047. Currently, around 40 km of metro lines are operational in the city. However, officials said these numbers are only rough estimates, and the final expansion will depend on factors such as population growth, passenger demand, and future urban development plans.
At present, Phase I of the Nagpur Metro project is fully operational and covers around 40 km. Phase II, which will add about 44 km, is currently under construction, with work progressing on several sections.
Planning for Phase III has also started. Authorities have invited tenders to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the next phase, which is expected to add around 55 km of new metro corridors. With Phase I, Phase II, and the proposed Phase III, the Nagpur Metro network could reach nearly 130 km, with further expansion depending on future transportation needs.
