Metro connectivity in Ahmedabad is expected to improve with several new extension plans in progress. Once approved and completed, these projects will create a circular metro loop starting and ending at APMC. The loop will run along the 132-foot Ring Road and connect with the existing east-west and north-south metro
lines. This will improve travel across the western, central, and southern parts of the city.
Ahmedabad Metro Expansion
The state government has decided to speed up metro expansion towards the South West Ahmedabad Sports Arena (SWASA) in Godhavi and Sanand. These plans are linked to Ahmedabad's preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Sanand is also developing as a semiconductor hub. SWASA is one of the key sports complexes being developed, along with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, the Naranpura Sports Complex, and the Police Academy Sports Hub in Karai.
Costing of the Project
The total expansion project is estimated to cost ₹25,746 crore and is targeted for completion by 2029. The government has approached the Union Railway Ministry and started land acquisition planning. The expansion includes routes such as the GIFT City extension, airport metro link, Thaltej Gam-Sanathal corridor, RTO-Jivraj-Narol-Naroda circular route, and the Paldi-Apparel Park line.
Proposed Circular Loop
The proposed circular loop will begin at APMC, pass through Shivranjani, Helmet Crossroads, Akhbarnagar, and Vadaj, and connect to the existing line at RTO Circle. It will then extend towards Civil Hospital via Shahibaug, move east to Amraiwadi near CTM Crossing, and head south to Narol Circle, Piplaj Circle, and Gyaspur before returning to APMC.
Additional Extensions
The detailed project report has been approved by the metro authorities and sent to the state government, which will go to the Centre later. Additional extensions include a 7.7 km line from Thaltej Gam to SWASA, a 12.5 km route to Sanathal via Bopal and Shela, an 8 km SWASA-Sanand stretch, and a proposed 9.5 km Jivraj Park-Apparel Park link. These projects aim to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across Ahmedabad.
