Guwahati Water Metro to Ease Congestion with 64km Network, 12 Terminals, ₹2,000 Crore Plan

The long-standing idea of introducing a water metro in Guwahati is now closer to becoming a reality. Kochi Metro Rail Limited has helped prepare a detailed feasibility study for the project, which has been submitted to the Inland Water Transport Authority for final approval.

Feasibility of the Project

Although the study focuses on Guwahati, it also considers the possibility of water metro services in Tezpur and Dibrugarh. However, the report has raised concerns about the practical and feasible nature of the project in these two cities, suggesting that Guwahati remains the most suitable location for the water metro at present.

Use of Electric-Hybrid Boats

Speaking to a group of media representatives from Assam, Sajan John, Chief Operating Officer of Kochi Water Metro, shared important details about the plan. He said the project is expected to cost around ₹2,000 crore. The water metro will use electric-hybrid boats that will operate on the Brahmaputra River, offering an eco-friendly and modern transport option.

Why is the Water Metro Essential?

The main aim of the Guwahati Water Metro is to ease traffic congestion in the city. With roads becoming crowded, the water metro is expected to provide a faster and more comfortable alternative for daily commuters. The planned network will cover a total distance of 64 kilometres and include 12 passenger terminals spread across four different water routes. The system will begin at the Guwahati Gateway Terminal and connect several important areas in the Kamrup Metropolitan and Kamrup districts. This wide coverage is expected to improve connectivity and make river-based travel a practical option for residents.

Success Factors of the Project

John also pointed out that the project's success will depend on several key factors. These include choosing technology that suits local conditions, ensuring proper funding, building the required support infrastructure, and carefully handling the seasonal changes and unpredictable flow of the Brahmaputra River.
