  • 01Ita Fort

    Itanagar is widely renowned for the archaeological sites present throughout the capital city. Ita Fort (the Fort of Bricks) is one of the most captivating sites of Arunachal Pradesh. The name Itanagar originated from Ita Fort which has an irregular construction. Being situated in the heart of the city, the fort is easily accessible from any corner.

    The history of the fort dates back to 14-15th century. Bricks used for the construction were of 16,200 cubic metre length. Some historians relate the bricks to the ruling period of Ramachandra of Mayapur. He was the king of the Jitari Dynasty. More than 80 lakh bricks were used to construct this historical fort.

    Even centuries after the fort stands towering, full of dignity and nobility. Brick is known as 'Ita' in Ahom language, and that is from where the name originates. The fort can be entered from three different sides - western, eastern and southern sides. Some of the archaeological findings from the fort are conserved at Jawaharlal Nehru Museum, Itanagar.

  • 02Jawaharlal Nehru Museum

    Museums round the globe are dedicated to the conservation of objects related to science, culture, tradition and history. Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum is one such museum situated at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh. It was established in 1980 and is dedicated to tribal collections of the state.

    Through the collections visitors are able to get an idea about the lifestyle and culture of the region. The museum showcases archaeological artefacts apart from clothing, weapons, jewellery, headdress, music instruments and handicraft. Due to its unique and interesting collections, the museum has grabbed the attention of the visitors throughout the world.

    A kaleidoscopic view through the museum focuses on the wood carvings, household articles and textiles. A workshop run by the Handicrafts Centre specializes in cane products. An informative library is also present there which helps to broaden one's spectrum of knowledge.

    A bust of Jawaharlal Nehru welcomes tourists at the entrance gate. Ground floor of the Museum displays musical instruments, traditional art, handicrafts and religious objects. Handicrafts are mainly made out of regional wood carving and cane products.

    First floor of the museum comprises of historical findings from Ita Fort, Malinithan and Noksparbat in West Siang district. Museum shop stocks tribal products which travellers can have as souvenir.

    Jawaharlal Nehru Museum proudly displays the entire expedition gear of Tapi Mra since 2011. He is the first person to climb Mt. Everest from Arunachal Pradesh.

  • 03Ganga Lake

    Ganga Lake

    Ganga Lake in Itanagar is one of the famous tourist attractions of Arunachal Pradesh. It is locally known as Gekar Sinyi or Gaekar Saenyik. Located at a distance of 6 km from the capital city, the legendary lake has lush green forest around it which mainly comprises of primordial vegetation. Tall trees, orchids and ferns are some of the species which enhance the beauty of the lake.

    This serene and calm lake is also encompassed by hard rock. Gekar Sinyi in Nyishi dialect means confined water. Rocky surroundings have made it a popular picnic spot. Availability of boating facilities, swimming pool and nature walks in the surrounding areas has made it further appealing to the visitors.

    This tranquil and natural lake is nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas and houses bountiful greenery. This fresh water lake nestles unique tree ferns. The lake attracts tourists round the globe for various reasons.

    The water remains green throughout as it is away from any flowing water body. Apart from the lake's mesmerising natural beauty, some mythical histories are heard about it and its greenish colour. Tourists also make an attempt to capture captivating views of the lake.

  • 04Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary

    Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the eight sanctuaries of Arunachal Pradesh. Located in Papum Pare district, the sanctuary covers 140.30 sq km. Diverse climatic and topographical conditions give way to a variety of flora and fauna. In the lap of nature, infinite plants and animals have added beauty to the sanctuary.

    Human population by the border of the sanctuary has been endowed with the responsibility to conserve and protect the wildlife. Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary was earlier known as Itanagar Reserve Forest with Pachin river in the south, Neorochi in the north-east, Pam river in the east and Chingke stream in the north.

    Thickly populated with wildlife, the sanctuary houses sambar, elephant herbs, barking deer, beer, tiger and panthers. Various birds and orchid species are also found here. Unfortunately, for the development and settlement expansions there has been clearance of the forest. As such the rich habitation has reduced to a great extent.

    The population of hornbill, the state bird of Arunachal Pradesh, has been badly affected. Earlier their presence was uniform throughout the sanctuary, but presently they are concentrated only in the eastern and northern part of the sanctuary.

    Vegetation is another feature of Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Mainly wet evergreen and the tropical semi evergreen reign the region. The forest comprises of a heterogeneous mixture of species. Apart from valleys and foothills, the entire region is hilly, which has given way to pure patches of bamboo.

  • 05Parks In Itanagar

    Arunachal Pradesh has diversified climatic conditions which has lead to the growth of innumerable plant species. These tropical and subtropical evergreen forests provide shelter to a variety of carnivores and herbivores. Apart from these forests, sanctuaries and national parks, Itanagar also nestles some of the beautiful parks of the state.

    They are directed towards recreational purpose and enjoyment for the tourists. Travellers and localites visit these parks in order to relax. Grass and trees serve the purpose of beautification. Indira Gandhi Park at Itanagar is one of the tourist spots of the capital city.

    Polo Park is famous for a small botanical garden. It is perched on a ridge at Naharlagun, 10 km from Itanagar. Being situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, this area receives rainfall throughout the year which keeps the park lively and fresh.

    Zoological Park at Chimpu in Papum Pare district attracts tourists for its variety of fauna. Different kinds of birds are also seen here which keep the bird enthusiasts glued to this park.
