  • 01Vishnupad Temple

    Vishnupad Temple

    Another charm of the city is the Vishnupad Temple, located along the Phalgu river, marked by a footprint of Lord Vishnu known as Dharmashila, incised into a block of basalt. The Brahmajuni Hill loacted 1 km southwest of the temple makes an interesting spot. One has to climb thousand stone steps to reach the hill and from the top you can behold the beauty of the temple.

    The foot print is 40 cm long and surrounded by a silver-plated basin. The temple possesses eight ravishing carved pillars supported by a pavilion. The temple is built of granite blocks and has an octagonal shrine facing towards the east. It has the presence of the immortal banyan tree, Akshayabhat where the final rituals of the dead are carried out.

  • 02Mangla Gauri Mandir

    According to Adi Sankara, the temple of Mangla Gauri is one of the Mahashakti peeths. The temple has been mentioned in Padma Purana,Vayu Purana, Agni Purana and in many scriptures and tantric works and it upholds the faith of Hindus in “Shakti”. The birth of the temple dates back to the fifteenth century.

    The shrine is dedicated to the Goddess called Shakti. The temple is built on the top of the Mangalgauri hill. The temple encompasses an Upa-Shakti Peeth which is believed to be a body part of Lord Shiva. Shakti is worshipped in the form of a beast figure, symbolizing nourishment.

    To reach the temple, one has to take a filght of steps and a motorable road. The sanctum consists of the symbol of the Goddess and finely carved ancient relief sculptures which look splendid. The front portion of the temple has a mandap. The courtyard of the temple has a fire pit.

    The temple has two minor shrines adding to the beauty of the temple, dedicated to Shiva and images of Mahishasura, Mardini, Durga and Dakshina Kali. There are other temples also found in the area.

    Jama Masjid

    Jama Masjid is said to be located at the heart of Gaya and has received the status of being the largest mosque in Bihar. It was built almost 200 years back by the Royal family of Muzzafarpur and it is famous for the celebrations of Shabina and Tabligh. Shabina is perfomed on the 27th night of Ramdan and Tabligh refers to the propagation of the message of Islam.

    The mosque, though old, has long been preserving the faith of the followers and celebrating the love of the Almighty. The Shai Gate’s minarets are worthing of watching, adding to the splendid beauty of the mosque.

    During the celebration of the Muslim festivals, huge crowds turn around to seek the blessings of Allah. The shrine of Hazrat Makhdoom Syed Shah is popular among the followers and they worship him and come and seek his blessing to get rid of their sins.
