  • 01Bhatkal Beach

    Travellers can visit Bhatkal Beach while heading towards the port town of Bhatkal if time allows. Surrounded by the Western Ghats, hills and coconut trees, Bhatkal Beach is located along the Arabian Sea.

    It was used as a major port in the 16th century during the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. Along with Murudeshwara Fort, this beach is also recognised for two major shrines, Vijayanagara Temple and Jain Chandranath Basadi that had animal pictures carved.

    It is also known for several medieval shrines situated at a hillock located in the vicinity called Kanduka Giri. The lighthouse located at the beach allows tourists to enjoy a striking view of the sea and the nearby areas. The months between August and October are considered to be the best time to visit this pristine beach.

  • 02Bhatkal Light House

    Bhatkal Light House

    Bhatkal Light House, built in the year 1891, is a notable attraction of Bhatkal and should be visited if time permits. This structure is located in the south of the entrance of Bhatkal river, atop a hill, just adjacent to the remains of Bhatkal Fort.

    It used to be a white stone masonry tower that was converted into a light house when a flashing light and a storm warning signal mast were fitted here in the year 1936. Therefore, now it has a double wick lamp placed within the lantern as well as a stone masonry column.

    During 1956-1958, a new lighthouse tower with attached auxiliary light cabin and fog signal baffle wall were positioned on the hill. On 21st March 1998, a metal halide lamp replaced the main source of light from this lighthouse.

    Kadavinakatta Dam

    The Kadavinakatta Dam, constructed across the Venkatapur river, is among the major sources of water supply for Bhatkal. The end-of-season rainfall is very important here for the water to last throughout the year. Tourists can visit the attraction if time permits, though swimming here should be avoided as it is extremely risky.

  • 04Kethapayya Narayana Temple

    Kethapayya Narayana Temple

    If tourists get time while travelling in Bhatkal, they can visit Kethapayya Narayana Temple that reflects the architecture style of Vijayanagara Empire. Several engravings and sculptures of Vijayanagara kingdom can be seen at this temple.

    A Navaranga, which is a four-pillared hypostyle hall, has been constructed here, surrounded by statues of Ashta Dikpalaka from the eight sides. Tourists can see various mythological and epic stories that include tales of Vanavasa, Ramayana, Rama Pattabhisheka and Putra Kameshti engraved on the temple wall.

    At the temple entrance, a large flag pillar, also called dhwajasthambha, is present in order to add to the beauty of the temple. A carving of Kheta Pai, an affluent supporter of this temple, and his consort is also present at this site in front of the idol.

    Khalifa Jamia Masjid

    Khalifa Jamia Masjid, counted among the eight old mosques of Bhatkal, is approximately 200 years old and should be visited by travellers passing through this port town. This mosque is situated on the bank of the river Sharabi on Khalifa Street. The original mosque was taken down in 1966 and the new structure with two rising minarets was completed in 1972.

  • 06Makhdoom Masjid

    Makhdoom Masjid

    Makhdoom Masjid, a must visit tourist site of Bhatkal, is located in the oldest Muslim residential area of the town. The name of the mosque is derived from Makhdoom Colony, which itself is christened upon Hazrath Makhdoom Faqui Ismail Sukri.

    It is believed that he performed Chilla, a prayer that is over a period of forty days, in this town in order to please Allah. Some of the other mosques that tourists can visit while passing by Makhdoom Masjid are Jamia Masjid and Sultan Masjid.

    Noor Masjid

    Noor Masjid, initially constructed in the year 1966, is situated on the National Highway in the midst of Bhatkal. This mosque, which is considered to be among the best mosques of the whole state, was rebuilt in 1987 after the older version was demolished.

    Tourists must visit Noor Masjid while journeying across Bhatkal in order to see the glorious sight of as many as 1500 people praying at this mosque.

    Sultan Masjid, constructed by Tipu Sultan, is a must visit attraction of Bhatkal. Constructed in 1211, the Masjid displays the Dravidian style of architecture. A large number of devotees, called namazis can be seen at this mosque during the time of prayer.

  • 09Jamia Masjid

    Jamia Masjid, thronged by a large number of tourists every year, is a 'must see' attraction of Bhatkal. Erected in 851 Heigra, this mosque has a dome of gold that was placed here recently. The presence of this gold dome earned Jamia Masjid a new moniker, Chinnada Palli, which literally means 'golden mosque'.

    With three floors and a basement, approximately 10,000 people can easily be accommodated at this Masjid. An office building located next to this mosque is home to Muhakma-e Shariyah, where disputes are resolved.
