Masjid Of Akhund Mullah, Srinagar

2

Masjid of Akhund Mullah or Akhoon Mulla, situated below the Makhdum Sahib Shrine, is a small mosque built by Dara Shikoh, son of Shah Jahan. Dara Shikoh had the mosque built in honour of his tutor Akhun Mulla Shah. The glossy grey limestone mosque is considered to be the mosque inside a mosque.

The main central, sanctuary of the mosque is completely separated from the building by a courtyard surrounding it. A striking and exceptional feature of the mosque is a stone lotus crowning the podium of the mosque. An inscription dating back to 1649 is carved on the stone lotus. A specially constructed prayer chamber acts as the main attraction of the religious centre.
