    Rih Dil

    Rih Dïl, also known as Rih Li is a beautiful heart-shaped lake that is located 22 km inside Myanmar. The lake is approximately one mile in length and half a mile in width. This lake is believed to be the passage to heaven for the souls of the dead. A strange feature of the lake is that its South West floor happens to be deeper than the north-west and that it gets deep abruptly immediately after the edge of the water.

    There are several folktales which surround this amazing and picturesque lake. Ril Dïl is a rarely visited place even today because of the difficulty to access this region. Yet, public bus facility has been provided from the Indo-Myanmar gate which will take you to the Rih. One can also get permission to visit the lake from the Deputy Commissioner's office at Champhai.

  • 03Solomon Temple,Aizawl

    Solomon Temple

    In Mizoram, there is a comparatively new sect who collectively call themselves the Holy Church and who believe that Mizoram is the Biblical ‘city in the East’. According to a famous prophecy, Jesus Christ will resurrect here. This sect is building the ‘Solomon Temple’, which is looked as a successor to the original Solomon’s Temple of Jerusalem that has found reference in the Old Testament.

    The Solomon Temple lies on the western borders of Aizawl and is a white marble structure that is completely surrounded by greenery. Spread over 3,025 sq m, the temple has four towers that are topped with a crown each. The four pillars on the edges have been emblazoned with the seven Stars of David.

    The four towers indicate the four virtues ideal for mankind – Salvation, Righteousness, Life and Overcomer. The area surrounding the temple has also been renamed as Kidron Valley, after the vast plains that lie adjacent to the Old City of Jerusalem in Israel.

  • 04Vantawng Falls,Thenzawl

    The Vantawng Falls is the highest waterfall in the state of Mizoram. It is ranked 13th among the highest waterfalls in the country. It is a two-tiered waterfall that falls from a height of 229 m. The waterfall is locally called the Vantawng Khawhthla and is very close to Thenzawl. It is 30 km from Serchhip and 137 km from Aizawl.

    The waterfall is spectacular to say the least. The Vantawng Falls is located in the Vanva river. It is believed that the waterfall is named after Vantawng who was an excellent swimmer and could hover in the perilous water like a fish.

    It is said that during one of his dare devil acts, a log fell on top of him and killed him. The tourism department has created a view tower close by and restricts people from going close to the fall. Tourists can book a cab from Thenzawl to reach the waterfalls.

  • 05Lamsial Puk,Champhai

    Lamsial Puk

    Lamsial Puk is a cave situated in proximity to the Farkawn village, in Champhai district of Mizoram.

    The cave stood witness to one of the most fatal wars that was fought in the region. If one is to believe the archived materials, it is said that in the olden times, there was a fierce battle which took place at this very site. The clash happened between two adjacent villages who disagreed upon land issues. A large mound of skeletons was discovered from the cave which belonged to the warriors who lost their lives in the war. These remnants have still been preserved inside the cave along with the artillery used in the war.

    The Lamsial Puk cave is the evidence of bravery and heroism as well as of the atrocities and horrors of war. It is this very aspect associated with the cave that calls out to tourists from far-off places.

    Best way to get to the cave is by taking the bus or a private car from Aizawl to Farkawn (total distance 92 kilometres) or take a flight to the Lengui Airport in Aizawl from any of the metro cities in India.

    Lung-lei

    Lung-lei is the second largest town of Mizoram and is located towards the southern part of the state. Lunglei, also known as Lungleh, in literal terms mean "bridge of rock", and this town got its name from the bridge-like rock that is found in the river area of Nghasih, a tributary of river Tlawng.

    The town of Lunglei is blessed with magnificent scenic beauty all around it. Tourists from all around the world visit Lunglei every year to enjoy the bliss of nature that is felt here.

    Some of the popular tourist spots at Lunglei are Zobawk Sports Academy, Kawmzawi Park, Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary, Saikuti Hall (a hall of events and concerts, and also a gallery for local painters), and Thuamluaia Mual (football stadium).

    Mizoram State Museum

    Mizoram State Museum is centrally located at Aizawl town. This ethnological museum is a house of over 2,500 items that depict the rich culture of Mizoram. Each of these items has a tale to tell about the ethnic background of the state.

    Mizoram State Museum was established in the year 1977 on Macdonald Hill, near the Chief Minister's bungalow. The items stored in the museum vary from photographs to archaeological objects to traditional musical instruments and even specimens of natural history.

    The display of various different textiles that belong to different Mizo tribes is one of the most popular exhibits here. All in all, this museum is a delight to every visitor, and especially those who are interested in history. The museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays, 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays. One can hire a local taxi to reach the museum.

    Thenzawl Deer Park

    Thenzawl once upon a time was only a dense forest. It is only recently, about 50 years back that the forest cover was reduced and man started inhabiting the place. This is the reason that many deer were frequently spotted in the area. The Thenzawl Deep Park was created to give a protected home to the deer.

    Today, the Thenzawl Deer Park has about 17 deer out of which 11 are female, and 6 are male. They are kept in their natural environment, and only the boundaries are protected.

    Tourists can visit the Thenzawl Deep Park and literally see these pretty animals quite close. The Thenzawl Deep Park is located close to the village and tourists staying at the village can easily walk to the deep park. However, tourists staying in Aizawl will have to book a taxi or take a bus to first reach the village of Thenzawl.

    Murlen National Park

    Murlen National Park is one of the most popular national parks of Mizoram. It covers an area of 200 sq km and lies very close to the Indo-Myanmar border. The Murlen Park is filled with cliffs and is popularly a home to a variety of endangered species of birds and also other animals of the wild. There is also the Thumkhuai Kham, a large cave, within the perimeter of the park.

    One great cliff by the name of Khampui is considered to be amongst the greatest precipice of India in terms of being the home of the wild. Several rivers, rivulets and brooks flow through this park providing abundant water to its existing wildlife.

    The forest cover of the Murlen Park is compared to that of the Amazons' owing to its thickness. It also has a part where only 1% of the sun's ray can penetrate this forest. For this reason, it is known as the 'land of no return' or ‘losing area of seven fellow-men’.

    There have been records of 15 species of animals, 150 species of birds, 35 species of medicinal plants and 4 species of orchids to be found in this park. One can reach Murlen Park by hiring a tourist vehicle from Aizawl (245 km).

    Rungdil Lake

    Rungdil Lake is a magnificent twin lake that is situated 14 km from Suangpuilawn village in Aizawl district. It covers an area of 2.5 hectares and the entire place is filled with the magic of Nature. Once upon a time, this lake used to be the home for a large number of partridges.

    Though even today, it is a popular destination for bird watchers and nature lovers. Rungdil Lake consists of two similar lakes that are separated by a narrow strip of land. It is, however, believed that the two lakes do have a subterranean connection.

    The lake is surrounded by beautiful tropical evergreen and deciduous forests, which is a home for several animal species such as bear, deer, tiger, wild boar, etc. Rungdil Lake forms an excellent destination for picnickers as well as outdoor campers.     Durtlang Hills

    Durtlang Hills is situated on the northern side of Aizawl. These are a line of rocky hills, which offer an excellent view of the beautiful city.     Mura Puk

    Mura Puk consists of six caves, which according to legends, were dug by the villagers of the area in order to hide from the man-eating eagle. The story goes like this that once upon a time, a gigantic eagle by the name of Mura existed in the area.

    Mura was extremely cruel and had a unique technique for hunting down his prey. He would sit on the roof of the huts and would thrust his tail through the rear door, scaring away the residents and forcing them to try and escape through the front door.

    When someone would try to come out of the front door, he would grab him with his beak and feed on him. He would torment the villagers by repeating this every single day until the villagers got together and dug up these six caves for their getaway. One can visit Mura Puk by hiring a tourist vehicle from Champhai about 10 km away.

  • 13Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary,Aizawl

    Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of about 130 km from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. The sanctuary covers a vast area of 550 sq km and has an extremely rich natural vegetation cover. The summers here are cool, and winters are equally pleasant. The height of the sanctuary varies from 200 m to 800 m.

    It is a perfect place to enjoy the magnificence of Mother Nature. The sanctuary is home to several different species of flora and fauna. Some of the common species of plants and trees that can be found in this sanctuary are Dipterocarpus Turbinatus, Dipterocarpus Marcocarpus, Terminalia Myriocarpa, Tonna Ciliata, Michelia Champaca, Artorocarpus Chaplasha, Sterculia Vilosa and various other species of orchids & bamboos.

    The common animals that can be spotted within Dampa are Tiger, Rhesus Macaque, Giant Squirrel, Hillock Gibbon, Leaf Monkey, Indian Elephant, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Gaur, Sloth Bear and Wild Boar.

    There are also various types of reptiles such as Python, Monitor Lizard, Hill Tortoise and King Cobra. One can reach the Dampa Sanctuary by booking a tourist vehicle from Aizawl, and the best time to visit the place is from the month of November to March.

  • 14Kungawrhi Puk,Champhai

    Kungawrhi Puk

    Kungawrhi Puk is one of the most significant and largest caves in Mizoram. This cave is located on the hills between Farkawn and Vaphai villages in the Champhai district.

    Legend has it that a long time ago, the spirits had abducted and used this cave as a confinement of a beautiful girl by the name of Kungawrhi. Kungawrhi was engaged to a brave young man called Pnathira. The incident took place on a day when Pnathira and Kungawrhi were on their way from Pnathira's village. The spirits were fascinated by Kungawrhi's magnificent beauty and they kidnapped her, hiding her away in these caves. The victimised girl stayed in the cave until the valiant Pnathira returned for his love and fought bravely against the spirits and freed his beloved from their trap. The caves were then named after this girl.

    Hmuifang

    Hmuifang is at an elevation of 1619 m and is an extremely popular tourist spot of Mizoram. The mountain is covered with lush green virgin forests that have been reserved since the days of the Mizo chiefs.

    The beautiful Hmuifang Tourist Resort is situated at the top of the peak. It is being maintained by the Mizoram Tourism Department. This resort offers a spectacular view of the never-ending nature that surrounds it. The magnificent cliffs and beautiful hills are simply breath-taking. The small patches of grasslands which are there on the peak offer an excellent location for picnics and camping.

    The annual Anthuriam Festival and Thalfavang Kut are held right here on the peak. One may also trek around to the nearby villages that encircle the peak. Hmuifang is at a distance of 50 km from Aizawl, and the best way to reach here is by hiring a tourist vehicle from Aizawl.
