Kalsi is a beautiful tourist destination perched at an altitude of 780 m above sea level in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. This place, which serves as the gateway to Jaunsar-Bawar tribal region, is situated at the meeting point of the rivers, Yamuna and Tons. This place is famous for various ancient monuments, adventure sports and picnic sites.

Ashokan Rock Edict, an important monument in the history of Indian epigraphy is one of the popular tourist attractions of Kalsi. This is a rock onto which the fourteenth edict of the Mauryan King, Ashoka, was engraved in 253 BC. The edict is a compilation of the king’s reforms and advice, in Prakrit language and Brahmi Script. The height and width of the structure is 10 ft and 8 ft, respectively.

Tourist Places In And Around Kalsi

Tourists can also visit the Asan Barrage, known as a resting place of various endangered migratory birds. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red Data Book has declared these birds as rare species. An avid birdwatcher can enjoy wonderful moments with various unique species of birds like mallards, red crested pochards, ruddy shelducks, coots, cormorants, egrets, wagtails, pond herons, pallas fishing eagles, marsh harriers, greater spotted eagles, ospreys, and steppe eagles. Tourists can see 90% of the waterbirds, including 11 species of migratory birds from the months of October to November and February to March.

Vikasnagar is an ideal place to go for shopping in Kalsi. Dak Pathar, on the other hand, is a beautiful picnic spot which offers various recreational activities like canoeing, boating, water skiing, sailing and hovercraft to tourists. They can enjoy rafting on the unpolluted water of the river Yamuna in the place. Mahaseer fishing is also arranged here by private resorts from the month of September to October and March to April.

Timli Pass, Katta Pathar and Chakrata are also worth-visiting attractions of the place.

The closest airbase of Kalsi is the Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun, which is 73 km away from the destination. Visitors can also reach the place by train from Dehradun. Buses are available from nearby cities, including New Delhi to Kalsi.
