Kochi Metro Phase 3 Moves Forward with 8 km Underground Link to Airport and New Tunnel Hub

The Kochi Metro Rail Limited is planning the next part of the metro system, called Phase 3, which will extend the network from Aluva towards Cochin International Airport and onward to Angamaly. A new Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to decide the final design, route, and stations for this

extension. The report is currently looking at bold ideas to make the transit system much more convenient for travellers.

Building of a Tunnel Hub

One of the major suggestions in the DPR is to build a special underground tunnel hub near the airport. This would put the metro station, airport access, and a new railway station all underground and connected, so passengers can easily move between flights, trains, and the metro without coming outside into the weather or traffic. The idea is to create a smooth three-way connection: metro, rail, and air transport under one roof. This would be a new kind of transit hub in Kerala that makes travel easier and faster for people using different modes of transport.

Kochi Metro Phase 3 Plans

Earlier plans for Phase 3 were for a 3 km underground metro section; the current work is considering around 8 km of underground track in and around the airport area, which has not been part of Kochi Metro's earlier phases. If approved, an underground station may be built near the airport hotel area, which would be the main entry point to this network under the ground.

Consideration of Cheaper Options

The project planners are also considering cheaper options, such as an above-ground walkway to connect the metro or railway station with the airport terminals. This might include things like electric buggies to help people move easily if the full tunnel plan is too expensive. Like all major metro projects, the Phase 3 plan will need to balance cost, construction challenges, and safety, including protecting the underground structures against issues like waterlogging, before the final plan is approved and construction begins.
