The Maharashtra government has decided to expand Mumbai's metro network by extending Metro Line 11 to Dharavi and Bandra, and a second metro line in Navi Mumbai to improve connectivity and reduce travel time across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Mumbai Metro Line 11
Metro Line 11 was originally planned as a 17.5-km underground corridor from Wadala to the Gateway of India in South Mumbai. The project was estimated to cost around ₹23,000-₹24,000 crore and is expected to connect many busy areas in the city through underground tunnels and modern metro stations.
Extension of Mumbai Metro Line from Wadala
Now, the state government is planning to extend this line westward from Wadala to Bandra Terminus via Dharavi. The extension will add several new stations, including Chunabhatti, Sion, Central Dharavi, Bandra West, and Bandra Terminus, increasing the total number of stations on the line, creating better links between the eastern and western parts of Mumbai.
Why is the Extension Important?
The extension is important because Dharavi is undergoing a major redevelopment project and is expected to become a large transport hub in the future. A metro station there will connect multiple metro lines, suburban railways, buses, and other transport options, making travel easier for residents and commuters.

Officials say that connecting Dharavi and Bandra with Metro Line 11 will improve access to residential areas, business centres, and important transport hubs. It will also reduce pressure on crowded local trains and road traffic. The metro trains are planned to run at speeds of up to 80 km per hour, with frequent services during peak hours.
Simultaneously, the government has announced plans to revive and accelerate the second metro line in Navi Mumbai to improve public transport in the growing satellite city and connect it to the main Mumbai region.
