    Padaleeswarar Temple

    The Padaleeswarar Temple is consecrated to Lord Padaleeswara or Shiva. It is considered as one of the most sacred Saivite temples. The history of the temple has been said to be as old as the Chola period.

    The temple was later renovated by the Pallava kings and the Pandiya dynasties. Appar, the Saivite Saint, is considered to have adopted Saivism within the four walls of this temple. It is said that he swam to this shrine in spite of his body being thrown into the sea with a boulder weighing it down.

    Devanatha Swami Temple

    The Devanatha Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Devanayakaswami and is an ancient Vaishnavite temple. Sri Thirumangai Mannan was the Alvar who has sung about this place. The temple is located between the Oushadhagiri Hill and Gadilam river.

    The Vaishnavite Saint Ramanuja is said to have stayed in this temple. In the region, the temple is considered to be as holy as the river Ganga. Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped in this temple.   • 04Fort St. David

    Fort St. David which was constructed in the 17th century by a Hindu merchant called Elihu Yale, is located on the Gadilum River. The British had purchased this fort from the Marathas and it was their headquarters for several years. The fort was under the governorship of Robert Clive.

    The fort was captured by the French twice in 1758 and 1782. However, both the times the British took repossession. The ruins of the fort which remain on the Gadilum River are a must visit for its historical significance.

    The sea port, also known as the port of Cuddalore is located at the meeting of the two rivers, Paravanar and Gadilam. Cuddalore has been a port town since the ancient times. The ships cast their anchor about a mile away from the shore and load and discharge their cargo with the help of lighters.

    A bar at the mouth of the river is used to maintain the depth of the water level, which is kept at around 6 feet at low water and around 4 feet during the monsoon months. The area around the port is rich in minerals, especially lignite. There are some oil crushing mills near the sea port.
