The Fast Disappearing Wular Lake!

Vast and beautiful Wular Lake is an extension of Jhelum River in Jammu and Kashmir. Hence, it is also known as one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia.

Nowadays, it is a common to hear about waterbodies dying out due to the urbanisation. Wular Lake is one among such waterbodies that is fast disappearing. Wular Lake is located in Bandipore which is at a distance of 70km from Srinagar.

Wular Lake, in the backdrop of mountains gives a feeling of tranquillity. It can be said that Wular Lake is misused for its own gifts; the biodiversity of the lake supports a variety of marine animals. Hence, it is one of the largest fishing grounds.

Fortunately, Wular Lake is one among the 26 wetland Ramsar Conservation Site. So, there have been several efforts to retain and preserve the lake. The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has undertaken many projects to improve tourism in the lake. In result of that, Wular Lake is a place for water sports like water skiing and boating.

Wular Lake, with its nature bounty attracts a lot of birds. It is one of the largest ground for migratory birds. So many nature enthusiasts and ornithologists come here to do extensive research on birds.

Not just this, the charming vistas of the lake acts as one of the famous picnic spots in Kashmir Valley.

Why is it Disappearing?

Extensive utilisation of Wular Lake is proving to be hazardous to Wular Lake. Apart from that, it is affected by the poor maintenance. Weeds covering many parts of the lake is affecting the avifauna. Although the restoration process is going on, it is still under threat.

However, one cannot miss this charming freshwater lake which is the source of livelihood for thousands of people. In fact, almost 60% of fishes for Kashmir is said to be caught from this lake.

So, it is a must to visit one of the serene tourist places in Jammu and Kashmir before it disappears. Make sure you at least do a pit-stop at Wular Lake on your visit to Srinagar in Kashmir.

How to Reach Wular Lake

Wular Lake is Bandipore district about 20-30km from Leh-Srinagar Highway.

Wular Lake is well-connected by road from Srinagar. Tourist buses are arranged a one day trip from Srinagar to Wular Lake covering all the other nearby places. One can also hire a cab or taxis to visit this famous picnic spot.
