  • 01Gommatesvara Statue

    On a trip to Sravanabelagola, tourists must visit Gomateshwara statue that is the prime attraction of the city. This 17-metre (58 feet) statue is the highest monolithic idol of Lord Gomateshwara in the world. This idol was built by King Rajamalla of the Ganga Empire and his general, Chamundaraya.

    Upon reaching the site, travellers would get the chance to see inscriptions written in Kannada and Tamil language. These inscriptions appreciate the effort of the king and his general in constructing the Gomateshwara statue.

    Bhandaribasadi Temple

With the size of 266 ft x 78 ft, this temple is the largest Jain pilgrimage site in the Sravanabelagola city. It was built by Hulla (the treasurer of Hoysala King) in the year 1126. Bhandaribasadi Temple, also known as Chaturvimshati-Jinalaya, has Bukkaraya inscription that belongs to the Vijayanagara period.

    The inscriptions found at this temple depict war between Jains and Sri Vaishnavas. According to a local belief, Bhandaribasadi Temple was constructed at different stages. Upon reaching this temple, devotees get the chance to explore Sabha Mantapa, Antarala, Garba Griha and Mukha Mantapa. Idols of Gods and Goddesses, namely Yakshi, Brahma and Padmavathi have been placed inside the Antarala.

    In addition, 3 ft high idols of 24 prophets can be found on an ornamental pedestal. Bhandaribasadi Temple has 3 doorways that are embellished with beautifully carved figures of animals and humans. It is one of the most popular Jain shrines, which was constructed by Chamundaraya, who was the disciple of Acharya Nemichandra Siddhanta-Chakravarti. This site, also known as Iruve Brahmadeva Temple, is one of the twenty Jain sites located in the Chandragiri Hills.

    The prime attraction of the Akkanabasadi Temple is the 5-feet-tall statue of Lord Parshwanath. Apart from this, the temple consists of sanctum sanctorum (garbagriha), sukanasi, gopurams and sabha mantapa.     Travellers are also 'recommended' to visit Jaina Math that is known among people as the monastery of Charukeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji. The presiding deity of the site, Lord Chandrantha, has been kept inside the sanctum. The very first floor of the three storied Jain Math was built in the year 1912 AD.

    Upon reaching the site, tourists would notice that three cells of the math are adorned with metal and stone statues that belong to the 19th century. In addition, travellers can see the figures of Navadevta Bimba and Yakshi Kushmandinidevi. Statues kept inside the Jain Math are made of copper, brass and bronze.
