Travel to the 10 Snow Destinations in India

Winter is around the corner and it is time to take out the woollens. It is also that time of the year when you start deciding where to head to for a vacation with your family and friends. While there are many tourist places around the country for you to head to, the fun of winter is only felt when you travel to places that come alive with the beauty of the cold winters.

There are many place in India that tourists can head to enjoy the cold. These places especially see a gathering of tourists as they want to indulge in various winter sports activities or just have some fun time with their near and dear ones. 1. Sonamarg
Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the city of Sonamarg lies before the Zoji La Pass in Jammu and Kashmir. Sonamarg is a perfect destination for travellers who have an interest in adventurous activities such as skiing and ice skating. The place is known for its natural beauty, that includes lakes, passes, and mountains. Travellers come here from far and wide to enjoy the snow-covered region and be mesmerised by its beauty.

2. Ladakh
Ladakh, situated on the banks of the Indus River, is a famous tourist spot in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as 'the last Shangri La' and 'Little Tibet'. The mesmerising landscapes and mountain peaks are some of the attractive features of this place. It is thronged by tourists during the winter months who come here to embark on the Chaddar Trek which takes place during the winter season. You can also head here for a peaceful vacation with your family.

3. Gulmarg
Gulmarg is situated at an altitude of 2,730 mt in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. Tourists must visit the Ningle Nallah, a stream originating from the melting snow of the Apharwat peak. Tourists can also cross the stream ending in Khilanmarg over a bridge, this is another popular tourist spot. The ‘Outer Circle Walk' of Kashmir Valley comes highly recommended to tourists. During the walk, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the place and the magnificent view of the fourth highest peak in the world, the Nanga Parbat, standing tall at 8,500 mt.

4. Kufri
Kufri is a small town located at a distance of around 13 km from Shimla and is a popular tourist hub during the winter months. The entire region is covered in snow and is a preferred vacation spot among holidayers. You can head here for a peaceful stay and enjoy the snowfall as well us other winter activities such as building a snowman with your near and dear ones or indulge in a snowball fight.

5. Dalhousie
Dalhousie is a prominent tourist spot located in the Dhauladhar range of the state of Himachal Pradesh. This otherwise quiet town comes alive during the winter months when it is thronging with tourists who come here to enjoy the snow. You can indulge in various sports activities such as skiing and snowboarding or else just sit back and sip on a hot cup of tea as you watch the snow falling from the skies.

6. Manali
Manali is situated at an elevation of around 1,950 mt above sea level and is counted among the most famous tourist attractions in Himachal Pradesh. It is popular among tourists for its scenic beauty, flowery gardens, snow-capped mountains, and orchards of red and green apples. It sees a major peak in tourism during the winter as travellers come here to enjoy the region which is covered in snow. There are many winter activities held here in order to keep the tourists indulged.

7. Shimla
Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, another top tourist destinations in India during the winter season. This picturesque city is situated in the northwestern part of the Himalayan Mountain Range and has quite a few places of interest for the tourists who come here. A popular haven for adventure enthusiasts, Shimla is home to sports such as mountain biking, skiing and para gliding.

8. Almora
Almora, perched on a horse-saddle shaped ridge, is a popular hill station of the Kumaon region. Travellers can enjoy the panoramic view of the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Himalayas from the hills of Almora. During the winter season this region is covered in snow and tourists who come here enjoy themselves in various activities like trekking the region in the snow or skiing through the hills. It is also a perfect place for those who want to enjoy the serenity of nature.

9. Darjeeling
The hill station of Darjeeling has beauty that cannot be quite expressed in words and has to be experienced firsthand. Located in the northern region of West Bengal, it boasts of snow-capped peaks, dense forests and pleasant climate. It has been the most favoured tourist destination since the time of British. Travellers coming here during the winter season get to see a picturesque view of the snow covered region and also can indulge in skiing here. The best way however to spend an evening here would be to sip on a hot cup of locally made tea and watch the evening sun set over the snow covered region.

10. Tawang
Tawang, the world of mystics, is a top tourist place in the western district of Arunachal Pradesh. Though this town houses many attractions travellers coming here during the winter season head to the Sela Pass to indulge in skiing and snowboarding or to the Shonga-tser Lake where they can give a hand at ice skating.
