Best Time To Visit Kamalgad Fort

The region in and around Kamalgad Fort experiences a bearable climate throughout the year. Hence, it can be visited anytime in a year. However, the best time when the weather is cool and pleasant is from October until the end of March. You can also visit it during the monsoon season, i.e., in between the months of July and August, when the entire region wakes up with lush greenery and a soothing climate.

The History And Surroundings Of Kamalgad Fort

Kamalgad Fort is located in the Satara district of Maharashtra in the vicinity of charming hill stations of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. With an elevation of more than 4000 feet, it is one of the highest hill forts in the region and hence, has become a favourite trekking destination for the locals.

Even though the exact history of the fort is still unknown, it is said to have been established in the Medieval Period of India. As per records, the fort was under the control of the Marathas. However, later on, it became a part of the British Empire.

Today, the fort can only be accessed through a trek and a hike as the fort is surrounded by a steep rock. In the past, the fort was accessed by a tunnel which is built at its base and is blocked by a large and heavy rock. The nearest towns from the fort are Bhor and Wai at a distance of about 60 km and 30 km respectively.

How To Reach Kamalgad

By Air: The nearest airport to Kamalgad is Pune Airport at a distance of about 137 km. From the airport, you can either hire a direct cab to Kamalgad Fort or you can take a bus to Satara and then from there, a cab to Kamalgad Fort. Satara is located at a distance of about 64 km from the fort and 130 km from the airport.

By Rail: The best way to reach Kamalgad by rail is to take a direct train to Satara and then from there, a cab to the fort.

By Road: Being a hill fort, you cannot access it by road and hence, you need to trek up the hill to reach the fort. However, the base of the hill is easily accessible by road.
