Pune's long-pending plan to directly connect Pune International Airport in Lohegaon to the city's metro network has taken an important step forward. Authorities have now finalized a possible route alignment for the project, bringing the proposal closer to implementation, according to the Union Minister of State and Pune MP Murlidhar

Mohol, after reviewing several major infrastructure projects in the city. Following the review, officials were instructed to begin preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed metro corridor between Khadakwasla and Hinjewadi. This corridor is expected to include a direct connection to Pune International Airport.
How will the Metro Connection Benefit Commuters?
If completed, the metro link will provide a faster, more convenient way for passengers and airport staff to reach the airport. At present, the airport can only be accessed by road, which often leads to heavy traffic congestion, especially along Nagar Road and nearby areas. The lack of a direct public transport option makes travel to the airport difficult during busy hours.
Ramwadi Metro Station
Although a metro line already runs along Nagar Road, the Ramwadi metro station is currently the closest operational stop to the airport. Travelers still need to use taxis, buses, or private vehicles to cover the remaining distance. A direct metro connection would help solve this problem by offering a seamless travel option.
Khadakwasla-Hinjewadi Metro Corridor
The newly proposed Khadakwasla-Hinjewadi metro corridor replaces an earlier plan of building a Chandani Chowk-Hinjewadi metro line. Before selecting the final route, officials studied six different alignment options. The new corridor is expected to improve connectivity between the western parts of Pune, major residential areas, and the Hinjewadi IT hub. It will also link with the existing metro network, making travel easier for commuters.
Commuters' Opinions
Meanwhile, some commuter groups have suggested an alternative Katraj-Hinjewadi metro route. They believe it could better reduce traffic congestion on the busy Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48), where heavy traffic is common due to IT commuters and intercity vehicles.
