  • 01Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple

    Sri Venkateshwara Temple is one of the oldest and most popular pilgrimage sites. It is situated at the 7th peak of the Venkata Tirumala Hill. Located in the south of Sri Swami Puskarini River, the temple has been construed in the traditional Dravidian architecture style. It houses an 8 feet tall idol of the Lord Venkateshwara that is placed under the gold glided dome called Ananda Nilaya Divya Vimana and the eyes of the idol are covered with a tilak of camphor, and ornamented with semi-precious and precious stones. According to practice, the temple of Varahaswami should be paid a visit to before visiting Sri Venkateswara swami temple.

     The Lord's Wondrous Idol

    At the famous Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple, the lord's idol inside the sanctum is nothing short of a wonder in all ways. While the legend has it that the eight feet idol has been installed at the place by no human, but is actually self manifested, it is adorned with a golden crown with a huge emerald, a double tilaka on the forehead that also partly cover his eyes and with decorative golden earings. The lord's right fist is embedded with a gem-set chakra, and the left fist holds a shanka (conch shell). And tha's not all. Tirumala Venkateshwara is wrapped in a gold hued cloth that is tied to the idol with a golden string and a gold belt with trinkets. The idol is also adorned with a yagnyopavita (sacred thread) and has Goddess Srilakshmi on his right chest and goddess Padmavati on his left chest. And lastly, his feet have a gold frame covering and are adorned with gold made anklets!

    The lord is renowned by many names such as Balaji, Venkateshwara, Venkatachalapathy, Srinivasa and edukondalavada (lord of seven hills). Brahmothsavam and Vasantothsavam are two main festivals celebrated here.

    Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple

    Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Appalayagunta is placed at a distance of 4 km from Tirupati. This place is believed to have been the resting place for Lord Venkateswara during his voyage to Tirumala. Lord Venkateswara also bestowed blessings on Sri Siddeshwara and other sages here after his marriage with Sri Padmavathi Ammavaru.

    The abhishekam that takes place every Friday in this temple is very famous. A large number of pilgrims come to offer their prayers here. The temple also has the shrines of Sri Andal, Goddess Padmavathi and Anjaneyaswami.

  • 03Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple

    Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple

    Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple is situated in Karvetinagaram at a distance of about 48 km from Tirupati. The temple was constructed around 14th century and is believed to have been sanctified by the Saint Sri Ramanujacharya. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Venugopala Swamy.

    The temple also houses the idols of Sri Satyabhama Ammavaru and Sri Rukmini Ammavaru. There is also a small temple of Sri Seetharamula Pattabhishekam within the temple premises. The main festivals celebrated in Sri Venugopala Swamy Temple are Gokulashtami, Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Teppotsavam and Brahmotsavam.

    Tirumala

    Tirumala is a hill station located close to Tirupati. The famous Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple is located here. The hills are 3,200 ft above sea level and have seven peaks. The seven peaks represent Adisesha and are known by the names Narayanadri, Neeladri, Seshadri, Anjanadri, Garudadri, Vrushabadri and Venkatadri.

    The Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple is located on the seventh peak known as Venkatadri. The word Tirumala consists of two words “Tiru” (sacred) and “Mala” (peak or mountain). Hence, the word Tirumala literally translates to “sacred mountain” in the Dravidian languages.

    The ISKCON Lord Krishna Temple of Tirupati is located on the way to the Tirumala hills. It has a unique style of architecture with the towers styled in white and gold. The carvings of Lord Narasimha Swamy, Lord Krishna, Krishna Leela and Lord Varaha Swamy on the walls are magnificent. The windows are decorated with glass paintings depicting the playful acts of Lord Krishna.

    Govindaraja Swamy Temple

    Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple is one of the most important shrines of Tirupati. It has been built in the traditional architectural method of the Vaishnava sect. The Vaishnava saint Ramanuja is said to have laid the foundation stone of this temple in 1235. Besides the Gopuram, there are two other temples with an outer wall encircling the two.

    The deity in the southernmost shrine is that of Lord Parthasarathy while the deity in the northernmost shrine is known as Lord Govindaraja.     Kodanda Rama Swamy Temple

    Kodanda Rama Swamy Temple was built in the 10th century by the Chola kings. Dedicated to Lord Rama, this temple contains the idols of Sita and Lakshmana along with Lord Rama. Legends say that Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana stayed in the temple after their return from Lanka.

    Narasimha Raja Mudaliar started the construction of this temple and its architecture is influenced by the Vijaynagar style of architecture. The cornice above the wall is decorated with Simhalata gables. The Vimana along with kuta, panjara, sala, kutaencompass are ekatala type structures. The phalaka above the tala contains lions in the four corners. The shikhara is round and holds a metal kalasha on top of it.

    Kapila Theertham is a holy water body of the only temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the vicinity of the holy cities of Tirupati and Tirumala. It is a huge temple located at the entrance of the mountain cave at the foot of the Tirumala Hills. At the entrance of the temple is a statue of Lord Shiva’s bull ‘Nandhi’.

    Hanuman Temple

    The Hanuman Temple is located near Tirupati and is placed at a distance of 3 km from Gogarbham Dam. It is believed that Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana stayed here with Hanuman. The place is also known as Japali as Lord Hanuman observed penance here.

    There is also a pond called Rama Kund within the temple premises. This place is believed to have been blessed by Lord Hanuman as he himself got peace of mind in this place.     The Alamelu Mangamma Shrine is located in Alamelumangapuram. It is also called Tiruchanur. This shrine is dedicated to Alamelu Mangamma or Sri Padmavathi Devi, the spouse of the Lord. It is believed that the Goddess was born in a tank called Pushakarini. The temple is well connected by road and would be ideal for a traveller who is on a spiritual quest.

    It is believed that one's worship is not complete without visiting Tiruchanur and worshipping the deity, Padmavathy. Sri Padmavathi Temple is located about 5 km away from the Tirumala Hills. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Padmavati who is the consort of Lord Venkateswara.

    Constructed during the period of Thondaman Chakravarthy, it is said that the devotees should pay respect to this temple before visiting the Sri Venkateshwara Temple. This temple is said to hold the tale of Padmavati’s birth and marriage to Lord Venkateshwara.

    The daughter of Akasha Raja of Thondamandalam, the Goddess Padmavati, was said to have been found in a lotus when the king performed a yagna, and hence she was named Padmavati. She is also called Alamelu Manga, which means an inexhaustible source of love and compassion. Once she grew up, it is believed that Lord Venkateshwara came for her and wedded her in a heavenly manner.
