Rumtek is a town surrounded by thick forests located about 23 km from the capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok. The town has become popular amongst tourists around the world due to the famous Rumtek Monastery, which is significant amongst Tibetan Buddhists.
A drive to Rumtek takes you through a number of Sikkimese villages and paddy fields. During the months from July to September, the paddy fields sport the look of a green carpet. These fields take a golden hue during the harvesting season, which falls between October and November.

The major attraction of the city of Rumtek is the Rumtek Monastery. The monastery is located on a hilltop which also gives great views of the nearby city of Gangtok. Another tourist attraction of Rumtek is the Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden, which is located near the Rumtek Monastery. Lots of varieties of plants and Himalayan flowers are found here. The garden is maintained by the Forest Department of Sikkim tourism.
