  • 01Bela Bhawani Temple

    Bela Bhawani Temple

    Bela Pratapgarh is the district headquarter of Pratapgarh. The place gets its name from the Bela Bhawani Temple located here on the banks of the Sai river. The story goes that Lord Rama crossed the river at dawn but first stopped to pay his respects to the goddess. Much later, the Bela Bhawani temple was built at the place where he had worshipped.

    The temple is about 3 km away from Bela Pratapgarh railway station on Sultanpur road. From the station, you can take a rickshaw to reach the temple. It attracts visitors throughout the year; however, there is a huge rush during the Navratri period.

  • 02Ghushmeshwar Nath Dham

    Ghushmeshwar Nath Dham

    Ghushmeshwar Nath Dham is located in the Lalganj Ajhara district of Pratapgarh. In fact, the town is generally seen as a historical pilgrim destination because of this temple. Legend has it that Lord Rama passed through the town during the Ramayana era.

    The rare kareel tree found near the dham finds mention in Ramcharitramanas by Goswami Tulsidas. The sacred Sai river also passes near the dham. The temple attracts hordes of devotees throughout the year who come here to worship and take a purifying dip in the river.

    The Bhayaharan Nath Dham is one of the most ancient and historical shivaling temples in India. Located in a picturesque village, Katra Gulab Singh on the bank of Bakulahi river, the temple is a popular pilgrimage destination in Uttar Pradesh.

    It is believed that the shivaling in the temple was established by one of the Pandava brothers, Bhima, during the time of the Mahabharata. He installed the shivaling after killing the demon Bakasura. So the temple is not just dedicated to Lord Shiva but also associated with the legend of epic Mahabharata.

    Nag Vasuki Temple

    The temple finds mention in the Puranas. The temple is unique in that the presiding deity is the Nag (snake) Vasuki and its stone idol is located in the centre. Belief has it that a temple was located here as far back as the 10th century.

    However, the construction of the present temple shows that it is not older than 18th century. The temple attracts devotees the year round, but more specifically during Nag Panchami when an annual fair is also held.

    Sai River

    The Sai river runs its way through the districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Pratapgarh district. Considered sacred by the Hindus, the river finds references in the Puranas and in Ramcharitmanas of Goswami Tulsidas. In fact, Puranas refer to it as Adi Ganga, which when translated means Older Ganga.

    The Sai river originates in the Hardoi district as a tributary of the river Gomti and cuts through the districts of Lucknow and Unnao. It enters Pratapgarh through the west, lapping the walls of the Ghuisarnath Dham on the south and also touching another religious place, the Chandika Dham, named after Devi Chandi. After a purifying dip in the river, devotees go to worship at the Dham and temple.
