Oyster Rock Light House, Karwar

If time permits, tourists can visit Oyster Rock Lighthouse, which is located on an island close to Karwar amidst a forest, during their journey towards the town. The lighthouse had been constructed on top of the Devad Gudda Island (Oyster Rock) during the 1860s by the British.

Travellers interested in visiting this lighthouse can take machine boats that are available from Karwar Port. On 25th March 1864, this light house became operational after optical equipment with four wick burners was installed here. A dome on top of the lighthouse tower enables tourists to view the entrance to the lantern room.

The lantern was painted white instead of red or orange in order to make sunrise and sunset more noticeable. An important thing to be noted is that tourists looking forward to visit Oyster Rock Light House need prior permission from authorities as the site is situated near the defence project INS Kadamba.
