    Ganapathiyar Kovil

    Ganapathiyar Kovil is a temple which was built 900 years ago. In a dilapidated condition today, the temple had beautiful carvings and inscriptions written in Tamil on its high granite pillars. This temple was made by the Chetti community, which still lives in the region around the temple. The Tamil inscriptions are about the Pattunool Shettys of the region. The community was known for weaving creative textiles and fabrics. Their speciality of the textile was known as Kanjirappally Katcha.

    This temple is a proof of early Tamil cultural influences in the region, which included art and culture and language. This temple is an evidence of the presence of Hindu culture in the area. The settlers in the area were migrants from other regions like Kumbhokam.

    St Dominic's Cathedral

    St Dominic’s Cathedral was originally built as a church. It is situated on the banks of river Chittar in Vayampu Purayidam. The location of the cathedral is quite captivating.

    Constructed in the year 1826, it was again renovated in 1945 and the reconstruction ended in 1961. In 1977, the church celebrated its 150th birthday on 17th March. It was then that the church was declared a cathedral. The cathedral attracts a number of devotees as well as tourists every year.

    Kanjirappally is heavily populated with Muslims, who are again migrants from other regions. The attraction, Nainaru Mosque, attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. It is one of the pilgrim hotspots for many Muslims. The migration of this community started through the mountain passes of Kumily. The greater numbers hailed from the regions of Puliyangudi and Tenkasi in southern Pandinad. They are also settlers like the earlier Hindu migrants, who had come and settled in this region. Their place of worship was the Pichapally Medu Palli and subsequently, they built the Nainaru for worship.

    The mosque is located 39 km off Kottayam-Kumily Road. This shrine was built to commemorate a Muslim saint who had become a devotee of the Hindu God Ayyappan.

    St Mary’s Old Church was built in the year 1449. It was consecrated the same year too. The Christians of this region enjoyed the royal patronage and sanction to build this church. This church was built with stone and wood and might have been rebuilt several times owing to its fragility.

    It should be remembered that Vasco Da Gama set foot in India 1498, fifty years after this church was built. Even St Peter’s Cathedral was consecrated in 1590 and St Paul Church of London in 1710. So this church has a lot of religious significance.
