The Tocklai Tea Research Centre is the oldest tea research institution in the world. It was established in the year 1911 with the aim to conduct scientific tea research for enhancing the productivity and quality of tea. In the last hundred years, it has established itself as one of the leading research centre in the world.
The overall tea production in the north east has increased from 234 million kg in 1951 to about 669 million kg in 1998 as a result of the impeccable research done by the institute over the years. Currently there are eight departments in the Tocklai Tea Research Centre that focuses on botany, agronomy, soil, plant protection, engineering, biochemistry and manufacturing technology, statistics and agricultural economics, and tea tasting.
