Nimati, Jorhat

Nimati is the most important port in Jorhat. The Nimati Ghat also serves as the entry point to Majuli, the largest river island in the world. The river port is not only of importance to Jorhat but to several neighbouring towns and villages in Upper Assam. The only way to reach Majuli is by ferry that leaves from Nimati Ghat.

The ghat also serves as entry points to several other tourist destinations such as Kamalabari and Auniati at Majuli Island. Nimati is about 17 km from Jorhat city centre. While the Nimati Ghat is very busy during the dry seasons – mainly summers and autumns, the monsoons can get quite risky on the ghats.

The tumultuous Brahmaputra creates havoc at the ghat making it difficult to travel to Majuli or any other place by ferry. Regular bus services from the Jorhat city centre to Nimati Ghat are available.
