Srinagar Rail Link’s 8 Features: Discover 3 Giant Tunnels – T 50, T 80 & T 44 Beneath the Himalayas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, creating a historic moment for rail travel in Jammu and Kashmir. This launch is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, a major railway development in the Himalayan region. The project is a great example of India's engineering strength and aims to improve travel and transport in areas that were difficult to reach before.

India's Longest Tunnels

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared details about the engineering marvels of this project. One of the key highlights is India's longest transportation tunnel, Tunnel T-50. It stretches for 12.77 km between Khari and Sumber. The second-longest, Tunnel T-80, also known as the Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel, runs 11.22 km between Banihal and Qazigund. Tunnel T-44 is the third-longest and connects Sawalkote to Sangaldan, measuring 11.13 km.

Tunnels Built in the Heart of the Himalayas

The USBRL project includes 36 main tunnels with a total length of 119.6 km. In addition, eight escape tunnels were built, covering 66.4 km. These tunnels were made using modern construction methods suited to the rough and rocky Himalayan landscape. Vaishnaw called this a "remarkable feat of engineering."

Chenab Bridge: Taller Than the Eiffel Tower

One of the most amazing parts of the project is the Chenab Bridge. This is the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing at 359 metres-35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. The bridge is 1.3 km long and took over 600 km of steel welding to complete. It is a true symbol of India's construction skill.

India's First Cable-Stayed Railway Bridge

Another highlight is the Anji Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. It is 725.5 metres long and supported by a single tall pylon that stands 193 metres high. A total of 96 stay cables were installed in just 11 months. If the length of all cables is added, it would stretch further than the distance from Jammu to Delhi.

Safe Travel in All Seasons

To make sure that trains can run in all weather conditions, special features were added. Vande Bharat trains have ice cutters that remove snow from the tracks, making sure that travel continues even during winter months.

A New Era for Jammu and Kashmir

The USBRL project is more than just a railway line. It connects remote parts of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. With improved transport, the region can expect more visitors, better trade, and easier daily travel. This railway link is a big step forward for development and unity in the country.
