Indian Railways has increased the number of coaches in one of its Vande Bharat trains to meet growing passenger demand. The country's 42nd Vande Bharat Express, which runs between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Central, has been upgraded from 16 coaches to 20 coaches. This change was made about two years after

the train started operations.
Flagging Off Vande Bharat Train
The train, numbered 22961/22962, began its commercial service on March 13, 2024. It was flagged off a day earlier by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India. The service is operated and maintained by Western Railway.
Upgradation in Vande Bharat Trains
Earlier, the train ran with 16 coaches, but now four additional AC chair car coaches have been added. This upgrade increases the train's seating capacity, allowing 278 more passengers to travel on each trip. Railway officials said the additional coaches will help handle the increasing number of passengers on this busy route.
According to the Railways, the upgraded 20-coach configuration will operate for journeys starting from March 9 to March 31, 2026. During this period, the train will run with the longer rake to accommodate higher travel demand between the two major cities.
Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express
The Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express covers about 491 kilometres, completing a journey in around 5 hours and 40 minutes, making it one of the fastest travel options between the two cities. During its journey, the train stops at several important stations, including Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, and Borivali. These stops help connect major cities in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The train runs six days a week, with Sunday as the weekly off day. The upgrade is part of Indian Railways' efforts to increase capacity and improve travel on popular routes where passenger demand continues to grow.
