Kochi Metro Explores 8km Underground Hub Linking airport, rail and metro in DPR review

Kochi Metro Rail Limited is studying a new underground transit hub as part of its Phase III expansion to connect Cochin International Airport, a proposed railway station at Nedumbassery, and the metro network through a single integrated tunnel system. According to reports, this proposal is being examined in the Detailed Project

Report for the Aluva-Angamaly metro corridor. The aim is to make travel between different transport services convenient within the airport area.

Kochi Underground Metro

Earlier plans suggested building a three-kilometre underground stretch. However, sources now say that nearly eight kilometres of underground alignment are being considered. If approved, this would be the first major underground section of the Kochi Metro, as both Phase One and Phase Two were built entirely above ground. The main feature of the plan is an underground metro station near the Taj Cochin International Airport Hotel. This station would act as a central interchange point. Passengers could easily move between the airport terminal, metro trains, and long-distance railway services through connected passages, without stepping onto busy roads.

Why is the Underground Hub Necessary?

Officials believe this underground hub would reduce travel time and improve overall connectivity. Travellers could transfer between flights, metro services, and trains more comfortably and quickly. However, building such a system would require advanced tunnelling methods, specially designed underground stations, proper ventilation, fire safety systems, and careful planning for passenger movement, luggage handling, and accessibility.

Approvals Await

The DPR is still being reviewed, and no final decision has been taken on construction timelines or project costs. More technical studies, environmental approvals, and coordination with airport and railway authorities will be needed. If cleared, the project would greatly expand the metro network and introduce underground metro construction to Kerala for the first time, setting a new direction for future transport projects in the state.
