Gondola lift, a cable-car system, designed by the government of Kashmir in collaboration with a French firm named Pomagalski, is popular amongst tourists for the aerial view it offers. Situated at the height of 13500 ft above sea level, this lift covers a distance of 5 km in 2 stretches from Gulmarg to Kungdoor and from Kungdoor to Apharwat. The Kungdoor Gondola station rests at a height of 3099 m, while the Apharwat station, at a height of 3979 m.
The Gulmarg to Kungdoor stretch of the Gondola ride crosses 19 towers. It has a capacity of handling 1500 people per hour. The ride from Kungdoor to Apharwat also crosses 19 towers and has a capacity of 600 people per hour. The second stage of the Gondola ride is considered to be extremely popular as it allows for a panoramic view of the Himalayas.
