Gurdwara Baba Atal, Amritsar

Gurdwara Baba Atal, located on the south of the Golden Temple, is the highest structure in the city of Amritsar. Built some two centuries ago, this gurdwara was originally a Samadhi of Baba Atal Rai, the son of Guru Hargobind Ji. Rising to a height of 40 metres, the octagonal tower of this gurdwara has nine storeys, each of which echoes the nine years of the short life of Baba Atal Rai before his death in 1628.

On the ground floor of the gurdwara are four doors on each of the cardinal sides; the main entrance facing east. The Guru Granth Sahib is kept within the octagonal elevation. Gurdwara Baba Atal is most famous for its 24-hour langar that justifies the old saying, "Baba Atal Pakiyan Pakaiyan Ghal", meaning, "Baba Atal sends prepared meals". An architectural marvel, this gurdwara is a must visit in Amritsar.
