Also known as Barapani Lake, Umiam Lake is located in Shillong in the state of Meghalaya and was built in the 1960s by constructing a dam across the Umiam river. It was formed to cater to the water needs of nearby towns and villages and was also the first Hydel Power Project in Northeastern India. It is spread over an area of around 220 square kilometres.
