The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has announced plans to operate 365 special trains for the Puri Rath Yatra in 2025. This initiative aims to facilitate the travel of numerous devotees attending the festival. The event, set to begin on June 27, 2025, is a significant occasion in Odisha's cultural calendar. It celebrates Lord Jagannath and his siblings as they are paraded from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple.
To accommodate the influx of pilgrims, these special trains will connect various locations across Odisha and neighbouring states. Trains will run from places like Rourkela, Biramitrapur, and Baleswar within Odisha. Additionally, services will extend to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Santragachi in West Bengal. This expansion highlights the importance of the festival and aims to ease travel for attendees.
Enhanced Rail Connectivity
The ECoR's decision to increase train services from 315 in 2024 to 365 this year underscores the growing significance of the Rath Yatra. The additional trains aim to provide better access for those living in areas not usually served by frequent passenger services. Other significant events include Hera Panchami on July 1 and Bahuda Yatra on July 4. The festival concludes with Suna Besha and Niladri Bije on July 5.
A highlight of the festival is Chhera Pahanra, where the King of Puri sweeps the chariot platforms with a golden broom. This act symbolizes equality before the divine. Devotees then pull the chariots through Puri's streets, singing hymns and participating in a tradition that connects them with their deities.
Security Measures
Given the large crowds expected, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held a meeting on June 22 focusing on security arrangements. A multi-layered safety protocol has been established, including coast guards, AI surveillance, drones, and possibly helicopters for monitoring. Fire safety and medical services will be strategically placed along the route.
