The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued a warning to Indian citizens who are travelling to or visiting the Maldives. This is the result of the Maldives recently making its anti-drug laws much stricter. The NCB explained that new changes to the country's Drugs Act came into effect in March

this year, and these changes include very harsh punishments for drug-related crimes. In serious cases, the punishment can even be life imprisonment.
Maldives' New Law for Indian Travellers
The agency also highlighted that the new law applies strict penalties even for carrying small amounts of banned substances. Recently, there have been cases where foreign nationals, including Indians, were arrested in the Maldives for drug-related offences. Because of this, authorities are urging travellers to be extra careful.
Advisory for Indian Citizens
The High Commission of India in Malé has also shared an advisory for Indian citizens. It has asked people to strictly follow all local laws and rules while staying in the Maldives. Travellers have been strongly warned not to carry any packages, bags, or items for other people unless they are completely sure about what is inside. Even unknowingly carrying illegal items could lead to serious trouble.
Moreover, travellers are advised to have full control of their own luggage and not leave it unattended to avoid the risk of illegal items being placed in their bags without their knowledge. The NCB has also encouraged people to report any suspicious situation or approach. This can be done through the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline by 1933.
