Following the tragic Pahalgam terror incident, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists, a significant security measure has been taken across Kashmir valley. In a move to safeguard visitors, close to 50 public parks and gardens situated in areas deemed vulnerable have been temporarily closed. This decision impacts 48 of the 87 public parks and gardens throughout the region, highlighting the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the potential threat to tourists.
The closure of these sites is a direct consequence of the heightened threat perception after the appalling attack at Baisaran meadows in the Pahalgam resort. This area, known for its breathtaking beauty, became the scene of a devastating event a week prior, prompting immediate action from security and local government bodies to prevent any further incidents. The targeted locations for closure are not only widely frequented by tourists but also encompass some newer destinations that had been opened to the public over the last decade. These include notable spots like Dooshpathri, Kokernag, Duksum, and the scenic Sinthan Top, among others.
Ensuring Tourist Safety Through Proactive Measures
The authorities' decision, albeit made without a formal announcement, effectively restricts access to these attractions. Notably, several renowned Mughal Gardens in the southern part of Kashmir have also had their doors locked, underlining the widespread nature of the security measures. Places such as Acchabal, Bangus valley, Margan Top, and Tosamaidan are now out of bounds for visitors, aiming to mitigate any risk of further attacks in these remote and possibly vulnerable locations.
Officials have emphasized that the security review leading to the closure of these sites remains an ongoing process. This suggests that more locations could be added to the closure list if deemed necessary, based on evolving security assessments.
