Hogenakkal is a small town on the banks of the Cauvery river in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. The town derives its name from two Kannada words, 'Hoge' which means smoke and 'Kal' which means rocks. It was thus named due to the smoky appearance on the rock created by the waterfall plummeting forcefully.

It is a popular weekend destination for tourists who come here to relax and rejuvenate themselves far from the bustling city. Hogenakkal Waterfalls

Hogenakkal Waterfalls is situated on the river Cauvery and is often called the "Niagara Falls of India". It is well known for the medicinal property of the water here. The carobonitite rocks that are to be found here are believed to be the oldest in South Asia and in the world.

During the dry season when the water from the falls does not have strong currents and tourists can enjoy a coracle ride here. Another unique activity that you can partake in is the catching of fresh fish here and then having one of the nearby small restaurants cook it for you as per your choice. It is a perfect place to relax as the region is surrounded by nature and is surely going to rejuvenate your senses.

Pennagaram is a small village which is located in the midst of dense forest. Travellers willing to visit this village have to travel through a fascinating winding road and the trip is made more pleasurable should you opt to go in a buffalo cart. I

In this village you get to encounter beautiful fields of mulberry, feed for silkworms  and most importantly the brightly colored statues made out of terracotta which are locally called Aiyanars. These statues are considered as the guardian deities of the village and represent everything from ancient warriors to modern policemen.

Subramanya Siva Memorial

The Subramanya Siva Memorial is a monument built to commemorate the brave young patriot Subramanya Siva who was one of the most renowned revolutionaries of Tamil Nadu. Born in 1884 in a small town called Vathalagundu near Madhurai, he worked closely with V.O Chidamparam Pillai and the poet patriot Subramanya Bharati and was an inspiration and influence to many young men who joined the freedom movement.

He was a poet and a scholar and penned the  'Ghana Bhanu', a compilation of poems and a book 'Jail Life' which portrayed his experiences in the jail. This monument in Papparapatti in  Pennagram Taluk was constructed on his tomb after his demise in July 1925. Tourists coming here can pay their respects to this valiant fighter and also be inspired by him.

How to Reach Hogenakkal

By Air: The closest airport is the Bengaluru International Airport which is 151 km away. It is well connected with all the major cities of the country.

By Train: The town does not have its own railhead and the nearest one is at Salem which is 75 km away. It is connected with Chennai and Bangalore.

By Road: The best way to reach Hogenakkal is by road. If you are coming from Bengaluru which is 151 km away, it would be an easy 2-3 hours ride and from Chennai about 5-6 hours. The place is well-connected by road. There are many buses that ply to and fro from Chennai and Bangalore here.
