Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to study the feasibility of constructing two new metro corridors to improve the city's public transport network. The proposed routes are Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu and Assisi Nagar to Wimco Nagar.
Chennai Metro Phase I
As part of its expansion plans, CMRL has already proposed extending the existing Phase I corridor from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam. This 15.46-km extension is expected to improve connectivity to the new Kilambakkam bus terminus. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this section has already been prepared and is currently awaiting approval from the Central government. Construction is expected to begin after the project receives clearance.
CMRL is now planning to extend this corridor further from Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu. The proposed extension will cover a distance of 26.9 km and is expected to improve connectivity for residents in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
Chennai Metro's Proposed Corridor
Another proposed corridor will connect Assisi Nagar in Madhavaram with Wimco Nagar. This 11-km route will link the Phase I and Phase II metro networks more effectively. Assisi Nagar is an important station on Corridor 5 of the Phase II network, which runs between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur.
At present, the two metro phases are connected through stations such as Alandur, Kilpauk, Thousand Lights, Nandanam, Koyambedu and Vadapalani. The new corridor is expected to provide another important interchange between the two networks.
According to CMRL officials, both proposed corridors are likely to be built as elevated routes because the roads along these stretches have enough space and width. The agency has invited bids to appoint a consultant who will prepare the Detailed Project Reports for both projects.
Officials said the consultant is expected to be selected within the next three months, and the DPRs are likely to be completed within four to five months. Around ₹2 crore has been allocated for preparing the reports.
According to the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, passenger demand on both corridors is expected to grow significantly by 2048, making these proposed metro extensions important for Chennai's future transport needs.
