Kathmandu location:
The largest city and capital of Nepal are Kathmandu. It is situated where the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers converge in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. The city is located in central Nepal's bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley at a height of about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet). There are four significant hills surrounding it: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Nepal is a mountainous nation that spans the Himalayas between Tibet and India. Nearly 100 kilometers to the east and slightly to the north of Kathmandu is Mount Everest. This region is frequently referred to as the entrance to the Himalayas.
History of Kathmandu:
The Kingdom of Nepal was centered in Kathmandu. The Nepalese monarch and his family resided in and worked out of the Narayanhiti Royal Palace. Different dynasties have ruled Nepal for centuries; the Malla Dynasty established the nation's first legitimate government in the year 1200. The Gorkhas rose to prominence in the 18th century, seizing vast tracts of land in the area, including Tibet. This move drew a harsh Chinese response, which led to the Gorkhas' defeat and forced them to retreat and cede control of numerous trading centers. The Shahs and the Ranas, who held the majority of the influence and power, later took the place of the Gorkhas.
Before the 1950s, tradesmen had always been to Kathmandu, and Hindus and Buddhists from all over the world would travel there to do pilgrimages. However, tourism in Kathmandu truly only began to take off in the 1950s. It gained popularity among the hippy generation in the 1960s and 1970s and later among independent travelers. Since there are now hotels to suit everyone's needs, including several luxury hotels with on-site casinos, it is firmly established on the tourism map for more mainstream travelers.

How to reach Kathmandu:
By Air: The Tribhuvan International airport, which is around six kilometers from downtown Kathmandu, is the closest.
By Train: Gorakhpur, in UP, is the station that is closest to Kathmandu and is easily accessible from Delhi. There isn't a train that travels directly from India to Kathmandu, Nepal.
