The North Karnataka district of Gadag houses a popular tourist spot called Gajendragada that you cannot afford to miss. Along with being a tourists' favourite, Gajendragada is also a famous filiming location with many Kannada movies being shot. Situated 54 km from Gadag, Gajendragada is 411 km North-west to Bangalore.

Surrounded by natural beauty, Gajendragada is famous for the Kalakaleshwara temple it houses. This temple is also called the Southern Kashi of India. It is a temple carved atop a huge hill. This spot perfect for a day trip has rows of windmills to add to the visual taste of tourists.

Huge steps take you to the temple situated atop the hill. It is said that the presiding deity is a self-manifested linga of Lord Shiva. In the vicinity of the temple is another temple dedicated to Lord Veerabhadra. There's also a very interesting and evergreen temple pond/well called antharagange just outside the exit. The water source is unknown and the roots of the Peepal tree beside it constantly drips water into the pond.

And Now the Mystery Part of it...

The New Year of Kannadigas known as Ugadi sees a few mysterious happenings each year. On the previous day of the big event of Ugadi, the temple priest places a limestone solution along with a hookah as part of the preparations. The next morning comes the mighty revelation. The limestone solution is mysteriously used to paint the insides of the temple and the hookah is well utilized. Some modern and liberal thinkers tried to sneak in to find the reason and were themselves consumed by mystery.

There was once a bell in the size of a soaked kidney bean that fit into twenty two gunny bags in this land or so it is said. And then a Kung Fu Panda moment happened! The bell levitated to the heavens with chimes never heard before. Following which the epidemic of plague spread through the village to blame the act of vanishing bell.
