The exciting idea of flying above Karnataka’s majestic Jog Falls is finally coming to life. In Shivamogga district, the Jog Management Authority (JMA) is bringing back its plan to launch a zipline experience as part of efforts to attract more tourists. After years of waiting, officials say the zipline could be ready in just about three months.

This thrilling project was first proposed back in 2020, but it was put on hold due to the pandemic and ongoing development work around Jog Falls under a ₹130-crore improvement plan. Now that tenders have been floated to find a suitable operator, the dream of gliding through the misty air above one of India’s most stunning waterfalls is finally within reach.
Zipline Details and Operations
The zipline will span approximately 460 metres, starting near Yatri Nivas' entry gate and ending at view deck 2. This promises visitors a stunning aerial view of the waterfall below. "Work is underway at view deck 2 and will be completed soon," stated a tourism department official.
Bids are being invited by JMA from agencies, with the contract awarded to the highest bidder quoting over Rs 45 lakh. The chosen agency will operate and maintain the zipline for three years, with an option for a two-year extension based on service quality.
Safety Measures and Regulations
The physical structure for the zipline has been ready for some time, but requires safety checks before operations begin. "We will conduct a safety audit of the zipline structure and repair or alter it if needed before starting operations," said Gurudatta Hegde, deputy commissioner of Shivamogga.
Safety protocols are stringent. The service provider must gather identification from tourists, including Form C from foreigners, and submit it to the local police. They are also liable for any incidents and must compensate if necessary.
Behavioural Norms and Penalties
Strict behavioural norms have been set by JMA. Misbehaviour with tourists incurs a Rs 10,000 fine, with repeated violations leading to licence cancellation after three instances. "If any staff member is found drunk on duty, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed," an official noted.
The daily adventure concludes by 6:30 pm, with ticket prices determined by Shivamogga's deputy commissioner, who also serves as JMA's CEO. Ensuring safety and enjoyment remains paramount as this thrilling attraction prepares to welcome visitors.
