Onam Special Trains to Connect Kerala & Other Cities

According to the railway authorities, Southern Railway will operate 54 of the 112 special services, while the other railway zones will handle 58 train trips. The additional trains are being introduced to help passengers travel more easily during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The special trains will connect Kerala with important cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Hyderabad and Santragachi. Within Kerala, the services will cover major destinations such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur and Mangaluru.

How will these Special Services Benefit Passengers?

The additional services are expected to benefit thousands of passengers travelling to Kerala for the Onam celebrations. These include non-resident Keralites, students, working professionals and tourists. Onam is one of Kerala's biggest festivals, and a large number of people travel to their hometowns during this period to celebrate with family and friends.

The Railways operated 55 special train trips during the Onam season in 2025. This year, the number has increased to 112, marking an increase of around 103%. The decision was taken after railway officials reviewed passenger demand and booking trends on important routes connecting Kerala with other parts of the country.

Railway authorities stated that they are continuing to monitor ticket bookings and waiting lists on major routes. More special trains may be introduced if the demand increases further.
