Uttarakhand Tourism Launches 5-Day 'Mount Kailash Darshan from Indian Soil' Pilgrimage

Uttarakhand Tourism has recently introduced a unique pilgrimage called "Mount Kailash Darshan from Indian Soil." This pilgrimage allows devotees to view the sacred Mount Kailash from Indian territory at the Old Lipulekh Peak in Pithoragarh district. This new option provides Shiva devotees with the chance to experience the majestic sight of Mount Kailash without the need to travel to Tibet.

Uttarakhand Launches Mt Kailash Darshan

The first group of pilgrims embarked on this journey on October 2, 2024, successfully viewing Mount Kailash the next day, October 3. Along with the stunning views of Mount Kailash, the pilgrimage includes visits to other sacred sites, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, making it a truly spiritual journey. The package offers a 4-night/5-day tour, which includes helicopter rides from Pithoragarh to Gunji and back, with comfortable stays arranged by the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) or in local homestays.

This initiative is expected to significantly boost religious tourism in Uttarakhand's border areas, offering an important alternative for pilgrims who haven't been able to participate in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since its suspension in 2020.

Mount Kailash holds deep spiritual meaning for many religions:

1. Hinduism: It is considered the home of Lord Shiva, where he resides with his consort Parvati in eternal meditation. Hindus believe the mountain represents the axis of the world, linking heaven and earth.

2. Buddhism: Known as Kang Rinpoche, meaning "Precious Snow Mountain," Mount Kailash is thought to be the home of Demchok, a deity of supreme bliss. Buddhists view it as a central place of spiritual power.

3. Jainism: Jains revere Mount Kailash as the place where their first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, achieved enlightenment. It is one of their most sacred pilgrimage destinations.

4. Bon Religion: For the Bon faith, which is native to Tibet, Mount Kailash is known as Swastika Mountain and is believed to be the seat of spiritual power.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Mount Kailash is also geographically important. It is the source of some of Asia's longest rivers, including the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali. Nearby Lake Mansarovar, also revered, is believed to be a place of spiritual cleansing, created by Lord Brahma.
