Kolkata Metro Blue Line Suffers Third Disruption This Month as Maidan–Tollygunge Service Halts

For the third time this month, commuters travelling on Kolkata Metro's Blue Line faced disruptions on Thursday due to a technical problem. The trouble started early in the morning when the first train of the day got stuck at Rabindra Sadan station. Due to this, Metro authorities were forced to run limited services and stop train operations between Maidan and Tollygunge for around 42 minutes.

How did the Disruption Cause Inconvenience?

The disruption caused major inconvenience to office-goers and school students, many of whom were unable to reach their workplaces and schools on time. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded as trains were not running on the busy Maidan-Tollygunge stretch, which is a key part of the Blue Line network.

Unscheduled Maintenance Work

According to a statement issued by the Metro, unscheduled preventive maintenance work was carried out between Rabindra Sadan and Netaji Bhavan. As a result, Metro services were temporarily operated only between Maidan and Dakshineswar on one side, and between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) and Shahid Khudiram (Briji) on the other, starting from 7.35 am. Full services on the entire Blue Line were restored at 8.17 am.

Disruption on 13 January

This is not the first time such problems have occurred this month. On January 13, services on the same Maidan-Tollygunge section were suspended after the first train could not move beyond a point near Netaji Bhavan station because of a power-related issue. The train, which carried passengers on board, was taken back to Netaji Bhavan station.

Disruption on 5 January

Earlier, on January 5, Metro services between Dakshineswar and Tollygunge were stopped due to another technical snag. Even before that, on December 28, a train heading towards Shahid Khudiram stopped just before entering Tollygunge station, causing inconvenience to many passengers, including schoolchildren.

Repeated disruptions have raised concerns among regular Blue Line commuters.
