The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given a ₹2,481 crore contract to Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) to design, manufacture, supply, and install 132 metro coaches for the upcoming Mumbai Metro Line 5 project. Mumbai Metro Line 5 will cover 24.9 km and will be developed in two

phases. Phase I will start from Kapur Bawdi, Kasheli, to Dhamankar Naka, whereas Phase II will start from Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, to Kalyan APMC.
TRSL to Handle Every System
Under the contract, TRSL will handle everything from designing the metro cars to supplying propulsion, braking, and control systems. The project also includes the setup of communication-based signalling, telecommunication systems, platform screen doors, and depot machinery. After completion, TRSL will provide five years of maintenance with a two-year defect liability period.
Titagrah's Commitment to Quality
Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TRSL, said the company is proud to partner with MMRDA for this major project. He added that the contract highlights Titagarh's capability in delivering world-class metro systems and supports India's goals for sustainable and advanced public transport. He emphasized the company's commitment to the "Make in India" and "Make for the World" vision, contributing to India's growth as a developed nation.
Driverless Metro Coaches
The new driverless metro coaches for Line 5 will be made entirely in India, featuring stainless-steel car bodies. Manufacturing will take place at TRSL's Passenger Rail Systems facility in Uttarpara, Kolkata, which is already producing trainsets for metro projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Bengaluru, as well as Sleeper Vande Bharat trains. The delivery of the trainsets will be done in two stages, matching the two project phases. This is TRSL's second major contract with MMRDA, after previously supplying rolling stock for Mumbai Metro Line 6.
