Kolkata Metro Railway has signed an agreement with the Nepal government to help shift the Nepal Consulate in Kolkata to a nearby building. This move will allow construction work for the Purple Line metro ramp on Diamond Harbour (DH) Road to begin without obstruction.

Signing of MoU
The agreement (MoU) was signed on Monday by Jhakka Prasad Acharya, the consul general of Nepal in Kolkata, along with S. K. Dubey, deputy chief engineer of Metro Railway, and Vipin Kumar, chief project manager of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL). The signing took place in the presence of Ashish Middha, director from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). As part of the agreement, the Nepal Consulate will exchange its current property at 7/1 Diamond Harbour Road, which measures 4,402 sq ft, for a larger 5,661 sq ft plot at 1 National Library Avenue, located right next to it. The consulate will be shifted to this new location.
Kolkata's Purple Line Metro
RVNL, which is handling the construction of the 14 km Purple Line (Joka-Esplanade corridor), needs the land currently occupied by the Nepal Consulate. This land is required to divert utilities and widen the western side of DH Road, allowing about 60 metres of the planned 450-metre ramp to be built smoothly. The Purple Line is partly elevated and partly underground. The first 8 km stretch from Joka to Majerhat is elevated, while the section from Mominpur to Esplanade, about 5 km, will run underground.
A Metro Railway official said that this land agreement has helped remove a major obstacle for the Purple Line project. With this issue solved, the construction work on this important metro corridor can progress more efficiently.
